| what does creatine do for bodybuilders? the supply of atp (the body's energy currency) lasts for about two to three seconds in high-performance sports. then the body must split up the creatine phosphate stored in the muscle in order to produce more atp. if this did not happen, the exercise would have to be stopped. the popular bench press exercise is a good example to explain this clearly: if very heavy weights are used to train approximately 70 % of the maximum performance, the body has enough atp for about two repetitions. the energy for the third and fourth repetitions are provided by splitting the creatine phosphate as mentioned above. the energy for the fifth and sixth repetitions is provided by the conversion of stored muscle glycogen (stored glucose). then the muscle is subject to acidosis and the exercise has to be stopped. because of the increased supply of creatine in the form of creatine monohydrate as a dietary supplement, the temporary storage for the third and fourth repetitions can be increased. the more creatine phosphate is stored in the muscle, the higher the energy reserves are. if the energy stores are filled to the maximum, at least two more repetitions can be completed as more energy is available. this performance enhancement is possible for all sports. |
